Digital editing differs from linear or traditional editing in that you must first convert or digitize your video and audio media before you can work with it on the computer. Media is digitized in real time similar to laying down your audio and video in a traditional edit suite. Once digitized, you can then manipulate your video and audio segments in almost unlimited ways to create your final program.

The key to cutting the amount of time you spend in our online edit suite is to be extremely organized before you enter the edit suite (edit rates begin from the time of your scheduled appointment).

Following these simple guides to save you dollars:

1. Make sure you have a completed script that lists all your source tapes and time code numbers in the order in which they will be used in the program. This includes: audio, voice over, video, insert video, graphics, special effects, and music.

2. Separate and release all your audio and video scenes by source tape. List the time codes in chronological order. This will dramatically cut the amount of time it takes to digitize media. You should be fairly accurate with your in and out points since unneeded digitizing uses up valuable hard drive space. Make sure every source tape has a title or number and every scene has a scene number or short title. If your source tapes do not have time code you can get a rough location number by rewinding the tape in your VCR, zeroing the counter and writing down the counter numbers for each scene. Remember that any time you remove the tape the counter numbers will most likely be off. You must then start again from the beginning. To create an accurate edit list, it is best to dub your footage to Betacam and then make time code window dubs. You cannot batch digitize or re-digitize a program without time coded source tapes.

3. All voice overs should be pre-recorded and ready for digitizing. If you need assistance with voice over talent, we can help.

4. Make music and graphic decisions before beginning edit session.

5. Transferring your voice over and music to betacam will insure accurate re-digitizing if needed. Cassettes, CDs and DAT will also work.

6. You can create your own title and graphic pages using programs such as photoshop. Save them as 640 x 480 Pic files.

Digital Preparation is essential if your budget is tight!
